“Betcha can’t walk to the next tree!” Sammie goaded Mark. Although three years older than Sammie, she was his best friend. Be it summer camp or summer in Europe, they always had an adventure together. When he enlisted, he saw the disappointment and fear in her eyes. He wrote her everyday but she never replied. He returned four years later; older and weathered. Driving home from the airport, he saw someone standing on his fence. He pulled over by the tree. “Betcha can’t love me forever,” said Sammie. “Betcha I can,” said Mark as he pulled her into his arms.
